Education is a Journey not a Race!
05 January 2012
Well I'm going to tell my story from now to begin; as it could be long and don't want you to give up!
I will be 30 this year, i'm pleased to tell you all that in September I in rolled in Caerleon University, my course is called Inclusive Education, which is a BA Hons degree. My over all goal is to work with children with Specailist learning difficulty, preferably working one to one with children with Dyslexia. I believe that dyslexic teaching should have high emphasis on life strategies and teach children coping mechanisms, that relate to confidence and showing them that they can do anything they want as long as they are willing to put in the hard work.
2011 was the year that I realised that within my head there was a perfect working brain, which is just wired differently. September 2010 I enrolled in college to do access to nursing course, at this stage I wanted to become a paramedic, the influence for this come from my partner's family who all worked in the ambulance force, they constantly expressed job satisfaction and enjoyment of a daily basis. Sociology and psychology absolutely fascinated me I couldn't believe that the aged 28 I didn't know about two particular subjects, is this fascination reflected in my grades and got distinctions in those subjects, however human biology side of things wasn't going as well. I must now mention the fantastic support from the college, i was given weekly help me write my essays and talk over areas which were confusing me on reading other peoples messages on here I would like to mention how my main area of concern has to be getting my ideas down and I need to talk to someone about what I want to say until I have done this a super struggle to express myself. ( I feel that this relates to a learned behaviour from school from writing things down and it being wrong, I see this as anxiety which can be ironed out). I also went to see a private dyslexic tutor ,which I have to say was the best money I've ever spent! my time spent with her enlightened me and made me the person I am today. Her understanding approach and ability to know exactly what was upsetting.
I'm not stupid! A lot of people have told me to stop being so silly but as a dyslexic person proof is important factor and on sitting down with my dyslexic teacher and seeing those results of my assessment she explained to me my IQ level and she explained to me my writing and reading ability she showed me the scales and how with technology university I could bring my reading and writing skills up to my IQ level. At this point I'd like to tell you I'm writing this using my Dragon tool program this program is absolutely brilliant!
However I feel it's important to mention that unless you admit that you do have a problem, then the help will not come to you! From my assessment at University I received an absolutely fantastic technology, which I 'm learning to use.
Okay so you before this I did my GCSE maths, it was a real hard process and is a very stressful time because I struggle moving information from my working memory to my long term memory intensive revision with them but I got there and got my grade C.
Here I must jump back and mention my working memory up until last year I never ever knew my phone number my tutor showed me a way of changing all my numbers into pictures and slowly but surely I learned the way of memorising my phone number.
"i work to live, not live to work"! of my old flavour quotes! Before getting back into education I spent my life travelling and seeing the world and of course partying! Working in bars and restaurants working very hard ( staying in my comfort zone)!
A great memory is coming back from Thailand one year and speaking to my mother about all the Buddhas I had seen. she started laughing and said you mean Bubbhas as this what i'd written on my post cards! You have to laugh or you could cry!
School seems like such a long time ago! It wasn't the most enjoyable time in my life that everything happens for a reason and I wouldn't be where I am today if it hadn't been from my experiences.
I now work weekly in a classroom aside a SEN teacher, the school system has changed alot, the help and support given to children with dyslexia is a million times better than in my day!!
I like this I just mentioning that if you feel that you may be dyslexic going get yourself tested, it will be the best money spent!!
you do have any questions please feel free to drop me a line.

What does Tomorrow’s Generation Dyslexia Centre in Cardiff mean to children?
Happiness!! Our aim is really simple... We want to provide young people with the necessary skills for them to learn effectively amongst their peers in a mainstream environment. This may be by weekly tutoring or more intensive programmes over a more extended period of time.
